Gina Kietzmann

Mathematics Department Head

Students thrive when learning math with me because I truly care about their success. After receiving my Masters in Mathematics Education, I had a great opportunity teaching math to preservice elementary teachers and working as a math specialist in the Learning Center at Elmhurst College. This helped me understand the importance of the basic concepts and how to best help students when working one-on-one. The next 20 years I spent teaching math and psychology at a small independent school in the Chicago area. As the math department chair of the K-12 math program, I interacted with students and the curriculum at all levels. The small classes gave me the opportunity to know my students well and to teach them 2 or 3 times during their high school career. I look forward to sharing my expertise here at Superstudy.

Graham Smith

2010 Teacher of the Year

My name is Graham Smith, and I LOVE math. I have been a classroom teacher for seventeen years, in both middle school and high school settings. In that time, I was named the Central Kentucky Special Education Collaborative Teacher of the Year. I have been given numerous awards by students, led professional development sessions on student engagement, and been dropped into a dunking booth by students dozens of times at the end of the school year (the greatest honor of all). Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 are my specialties, but I also love Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and remedial mathematics. I think math is beautiful, elegant, and interesting. A student who fills their mathematical toolbelt with skills will always be able to build something incredible, and it's my job to be sure a student is stocked with the tools they need. Once a student becomes an expert in the tools of the trade, the sky is the limit.

Ruth Kivisto

MA in Math Education

With more than 25 years of teaching experience, I bring a great blend of knowledge, compassion, and enthusiasm to discussions with students. My students know me as a patient, caring, encouraging, and inspiring teacher; and because of this, I have developed a longstanding, positive rapport with students. I have had the privilege of working with students in grades 5-12 and in all levels of math typical for these grades. From Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus, the rewards have been rich while helping students build their confidence and unlock their own potential. I have earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in secondary math education; but the most profound personal and professional growth has come from working with over 1600 students in my teaching career. Each student offers a unique way of thinking mathematically; and working with the individual student is what has inspired me most as a teacher.

Brandon Leahy

MA in Teaching

A fine mathematician meets questions with certainty, intuition, and an eye for the aesthetic. My academic journey began at Brandeis University. There, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and later pursued a Master of Arts in Teaching. For three years, I dedicated myself to teaching mathematics at public high schools in Massachusetts. Presently, I am writing my thesis to complete my MSc in Applied Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. To me, mathematics and its education are my life's passion. My teaching philosophy is best summarized in the words of Henri Poincare, who noted that "in becoming rigorous, mathematical science takes a character so artificial as to strike everyone; it forgets its historical origins; we see how the questions can be answered, we no longer see how and why they are put. [...] intuition must retain its role as complement." I strive to present mathematics as a captivating narrative by first posing intriguing questions. Only then do we proceed with formal definitions.

Carissa McKinney

Master Degree in Science Education

Hi! After graduating with an Honors Degree with Distinction in Biological Science from the University of Delaware, I earned a Master Degree in Science Education from Miami University of Ohio. I have had the pleasure of working as a educator at the Museum of Science Boston, the New England Aquarium and schools around Boston. I have been a fellow with the NSF and NIH, worked at Marine Biological Laboratory and University of Massachusetts Boston doing research in the microscopy and ecology respectively. As a classroom teacher, I have taught grades k-12 in science, SAT/ACT prep, AP Biology, and engineering. For me, teaching is about helping students find their curiosity in any topic to and allowing them to find the relevance in their lives. By using comparisons to students every day, memory aids and breaking down larger topics I help students understand science, math and even executive functioning in a way that helps them learn and retain the information from class! I love teaching and would be honored to help your student excel:)

Chemistry and physics can seem impossible - I am an expert at making it all make sense! My name is Dave Consiglio, and I'm a high school chemistry and physics teacher and a community college chemistry professor. I have been teaching since 1999 and have been tutoring privately for around 10 years. I hold two degrees, a bachelor's degree in education from The University of Michigan and a master's degree in Chemistry from The University of Detroit. During my 25 years as a teacher, I have taught all levels of chemistry (including AP chemistry for 13 years) and physics, as well as college inorganic and organic chemistry. I know chemistry and physics backward and forward, but that's not what makes me the right tutor for you. Lots of people know science - my real strength is science communication. I have spent more than half my life explaining chemistry and physics to students in ways that help students make sense of these often confusing topics. I can help you, too.

Masters of Science

Teaching is my passion. I have been teaching Chemistry for over 16 years at various levels from high school to university level with a diversified student population in the United States both in person and online. I hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. I enjoy teaching. I like to interact with my students and build their confidence and set a positive mindset for their learning. I believe everyone is capable and has the talent to learn but we need to work together to find out the shortcomings and bridge that gap and build from there to meet expectations and progress to the next level. Chemistry is a very interesting but challenging subject. My goal as a teacher is to make it a fun experience and relate the learning to real life applications to make the student aware of the importance of learning Chemistry so it makes sense to them as why to learn Chemistry and help develop problem solving skills.
